Projects In Development
North Shore Community Park – Stormwater Protection Expansion
The bid has been awarded and construction will begin soon. This stormwater protection expansion is being done to safeguard the park, construction of which was completed in the Fall of 2018, from possible future flooding during heavy rainfalls.
Palm Desert Community Center Renovation
This renovation project is currently at 50% completion of the construction drawing phase, and is anticipated to go out to bid late summer to early fall 2023.
The plans include expanding the lobby, converting the tot program room to a fitness room, moving the reception and administrative areas to the current fitness area, and the current reception area being changed to an activity room for classes such as dance and aerobics.
Shade Structures – Additions to existing Facilities
In recent years we have installed shade structures at locations including Parque de Pueblo, Huerta de Mecca, and La Quinta, Mecca, and Thousand Palms Community Parks.
We continually apply for grant funding to add even more shade structures for facilities such as Oasis del Desierto Park.
Shumay Ranch sits on a 640-acre piece of land within the San Jacinto and Santa Rosa Mountains National Monument and was purchased by the State of California in 2017. Through the Coachella Valley Desert and Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority, the management, renovation, and restoration of Shumary Ranch is underway so that wildlife preservation continues while allowing the ranch to be appropriately accessible to the public for small group educational opportunities.
Thermal Community Park
Thermal Community Park is a 10-acre site designed by local residents with the assistance of Desert Recreation District and Kounkuey Design Initiative (KDI). It will be the first community park in Thermal and is centrally located so outdoor recreation and programming is easily accessible to all residents.
Thousand Palms Community Park – Walking Path Lighting
The design is currently in plan check, and once approved, will move on to the construction bid phase.
Temporary lighting has been placed around the southwestern portion of the field until the permanent lighting project is awarded and built.
