Desert Recreation District Opens North Shore Beach & Yacht Club to Support Train Derailment Response Efforts

NORTH SHORE, Calif., March 20, 2026, In response to the recent train derailment near the Salton Sea and North Shore area, Desert Recreation District is making the North Shore Beach & Yacht Club available to support first responders, train crew members, and recovery teams working in the area. According to local reports, the derailment happened near Highway 111 and Parkside Drive on March 18. Highway 111 has since reopened.

The North Shore Beach & Yacht Club will serve as a cooling center and support site, offering restrooms, drinking water, and a place for response personnel to rest during the current regional heat advisory. Local weather reporting shows a heat advisory remains in effect through Friday evening, March 20, adding urgency to the need for cooling and hydration support for crews working prolonged hours outdoors.

“Our hearts are with everyone impacted by this derailment, and we are grateful for the first responders, train crew, and recovery teams working under extremely difficult conditions,” said Dr. Gabriel Martin, General Manager of Desert Recreation District. “The North Shore Beach & Yacht Club is here to serve as a place of relief and support, with access to water, restrooms, and cooling space for those on the front lines of this response.”

Available for first responders: Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. From 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., a phone number will be posted on the door for access assistance. Saturday and Sunday, Closed
