Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the hiring process take?
An average of four to six weeks.
Do you notify me if I don't get an interview?
Yes. Letters or emails are sent to all applicants.
Is a background check done before I can be hired?
Yes. All offers of employment are contingent upon the applicant passing a thorough background investigation that includes a criminal conviction history, employment history and controlled substance test.
How do you do what you do?
The energy here is contagious! Our success is found in our team members as we continually strive for excellence by upholding four core values:

Respect for All People
We believe that everyone has value. Our team members foster an environment of mutual respect, free of discrimination and harassment.

Doing the Right Thing
We exercise good judgment by "doing the right thing" instead of just "doing things right." We accept responsibility for what we do and strive to understand the impact of our actions, behaviors and decisions.

Fostering Teamwork
We work together towards our common purpose of providing opportunities for life enriching experiences and service that is second to none.

Excellence in Guest Service
Along with our quality programs and activities, we must go the extra mile to give our guests knowledgeable service about recreation and leisure activities as well as promote health and wellness to help them use our programs and services to their maximum benefit.
Who is the Desert Recreation District?
We were founded in 1950 out of a need for recreation and park services in the Coachella Valley. As a government agency and special district, we deliver recreation programs, activities and special events for all ages and also partner with several agencies including many of the cities in the Coachella Valley and Riverside County to provide recreation services.

Here are just a few of the hundreds of opportunities we offer: Tiny Tots, Youth Basketball, Karate, Zumba, After School programs, Cardio Kickboxing, Santa's Hotline, Desert Rock, International Sports Festival, Halloween Spooktacular... Each year we serve thousands of guests in our programs and facilities including residents in the cities of Coachella, Indian Wells, Indio, La Quinta, Palm Desert, and Rancho Mirage and in the unincorporated communities of Bermuda Dunes, Indio Hills, Mecca, North Shore, Oasis, Salton Sea, Thermal, One Hundred Palms, Desert Palms and Thousand Palms. The District is funded by a mixture of property tax, grants, assessments and user fees. These funds make it possible for us to provide opportunities for people of all ages to experience life enrichment through our facilities, programs, and community activities.
How many team members does the District employ?
Approximately 50 full-time and 175-250 part-time and seasonal team members. (These numbers are subject to change each fiscal year.)
What kind of workweek do you have?
Generally, our full-time team members work a 40 hour workweek and as needed during our special events. Our part-time team members work an average 20 hours per week.
